Blitz was bred by Steve Renner of Team Snowspeeder. His father comes from Sibersong and he's yet another descendent of Sibersong's Stars Hollow (Denali's father and Willow's grandfather).
Blitz joined the team in January of 2017. He's proven to be a powerhouse in harness, running hard right from day one. I tried Blitz out in lead, but he seems happiest running somewhere within the team. He’s what I would consider a “soft” dog, who needs a lot of reassurance.
In the fall of 2020, Blitz had a seizure towards the end of a ten mile training run. It was one of the most traumatic experiences of my life and definitely put a damper on our whole season. Thankfully, the problem was just low blood sugar—something that was easily identified, fixed, and prevented. Blitz has always been a picky eater and he just didn’t have enough food the morning before that particular run.
Since then, Blitz has been happy and healthy, running in wheel next to his buddy, Hubble. I hope to see him on the trail with us as we run longer races, but we’ll need to make sure he eats plenty beforehand!

Blitzen was named after his Grandmother, who he bears a strong resemblance. Her name was Lightning, and Blitz is German for Lightning.

*Note: After receiving the genetic ancestry results for Atlas, who shares the same Howling Spirits lines with Blitz, I decided to send out an Embark swab for him as well. His results confirmed a mixed ancestry with Alaskan Husky type dogs. You can see his Embark profile here.
Worth mentioning: we do not compete in registered breed classes when we race, since the team has always contained non-purebred dogs. We are not gaining any competitive advantage with his uncertain breed history.
